About Viner Beta

A fan-made, experimental way to explore — and extend — the original Vine archive.

📘

Overview

Viner is an unofficial, fan-made project built by Reese Thompson to bring the original Vine archive back to life. The Viner Beta you’re using here runs on top of that archive and adds experimental features like account creation, logging in, and posting new 6-second clips called Viners.

This beta is not final; features may break, reset, or change without warning as we refine how the modern platform and the historical archive fit together.

🛠️

How the archive was rebuilt

Viner’s archive is powered by two key discoveries: working JSON endpoints at archive.vine.co that still served profile and post metadata, and the original media bucket at vines.s3.amazonaws.com that still hosted the video files, thumbnails, and other assets.

By combining those sources, we were able to reconstruct user profiles, captions, stats, timestamps, and link them directly to playable media — effectively reviving Vine’s backend in read-only form. That’s why Viner can surface over 1.8 million clips, far more than archives that rely only on tweet scraping or small curated sets.

The Beta layer you’re using now sits on top of that restored dataset, letting people create new Viners while keeping the original historical data preserved.

⚠️

Current limitations

This is a testing environment. Accounts, profiles, and uploads may be wiped, migrated, or changed as the platform evolves. Bugs, missing features, and rough edges are expected.

The underlying archive stays effectively read-only; what you change here are the new Viners and modern account data, not the original Vine records.

💚

Support the project

Keeping a multi-million-clip archive online — plus running a modern beta platform on top of it — costs real money in storage, bandwidth, and compute. If you’d like to help keep Viner online and growing:

Mobile beta

A Viner Android app is in development and will connect to the same backend as this beta site. The plan is to roll out a closed-testing beta so we can test account flows, browsing, and posting new Viners on mobile before opening things up wider.

When it’s ready, details on how to join the mobile beta will be announced through Viner’s site and social channels.

Disclaimer

Viner is a fan project and is not affiliated with Twitter, Vine, or any of their successors. The revived archive uses surviving official endpoints and media buckets, but it is still incomplete and may contain missing or broken items.

The new systems for accounts and posting Viners in this Beta are completely unofficial and experimental, and do not represent an “official” return of Vine.
